Gnawgahyde (Poacher)

There are still parts of the world left untouched by modern man. Places that will kill you if you don't respect them. One of these places is the Congo Rain Forest. Home to hundreds of undiscovered species of insect and animal. Home to ancient tribes left untouched by today's society and home to Gnawgahyde and Cobra. Gnawgahyde started out as just a poacher, one of the best as told by some. He would become the jungle when hunting his pray. Bathing only in the rains that battered the ground daily in the Congo, smearing rancid hog fat over his body and eating only what he could trap and kill in the wild. All so the game he hunted could not detect the foul smell of man on the hunt. His only downfall was his insatiable addiction to gambling and the debt that he racked up with it. Cobra took Gnawgahyde under their wing of protection in exchange for his services as a games keeper and mercenary. Gnawgahyde will hunt a man just as well as an animal, to him, they're all the same.

Creator's Notes

I remember disliking this figure very much as a child and it was on only until recently that I realized what I hated so much. It wasn't the animal skins or the crazy look on his face, it wasn't even the fact that he came with a wild boar. It was the color of his pants. The deep blue that looks so good on other Cobra figures made this one so unattractive to me that I never wanted to own him. Over time a few came into my collection, but it wasn't until the 2004 GI Joe convention in Disney world that I saw this mold used in a different way with different colors and that's when it truly struck me. This is a simple repaint of accessories and pants, with a lot of small details added. I was surprised at just how detailed this figure was when I started painting him. The belt, grenades, canteen, pistol in his boot and sheathed knife tucked nicely behind his back. This was a great figure waiting to be found.
