Zandar

Zandar just has something about him, something that just doesn't stick with you when you meet him. Most people never really recall his features or his voice. Often you could forget that he's standing in a room, even when he's right next to you. Zandar noticed this early on in his life and worked hard to perfect it. Constantly moving about silently and learning how to distract others from his movements. At that time he really didn't know what he was "Training" for but the idea that he could approach people without raising a hair on their neck thrilled him. With time his interests expanded into silent weapons and camouflage, learning much from his older brother who had recently returned from military school under questionable circumstances. Zandar decided that he could use his talents as a thief and a hustler and it wasn't very long before he found himself with blood on his hands. Many years went by, some were spent in hiding and others living under numerous identities getting by from job to job. One day his Sister came to him with troubling news, their brother had been captured by the US Government and they needed to break him out. After a successful rescue, both Zandar and his Sister Zarana continued to work closely with their brother Zartan. and his employer, Cobra.

Creator's Notes

Always a great character diminished by a poor choice of colors on his original figure. Larry Hama did a great job to develope the beginnings of a personality for this character but never really went anywhere with it and I fully believe it was because of the horrible colors originally used on the figure. Here we have a dangerous Impersonator, assassin, master of disguise ( very much like his Brother Zartan. ) that walks around bare chest with teal straps and light grey pants.

Now skip ahead 15 years while Image comics were publishing G.I. Joe "Frontlines", a great comic that was too shortly lived, where during a great story arc involving another one of my favorite characters "Chuckles", Zandar makes his first appearance as an assassin working for Cobra. This was not the Zandar that we all knew from 1986, this Zandar was outfitted with the same basic outfit concepts but with a more realistic edge. Black shirt and pants, leather straps and holster, short tight sleeves instead of the bronze colored armor that he originally had. The only thing that irked me was that they left his bandana white, which I can only assume was a mistake. I saw this character and automatically wanted him and since Hasbro didn't seem obliged to make me a figure, I made my own.

The kept the scarf around his neck, not out of lazyness, but because I always thought it looked cool and gave it a slightly lighter almost grey color to match his boots. The GI Joe comic has given us another update to Zandar in recent issues, with a blue shirt and some other interesting colors, but this was one of the best customes I've ever seen on the character. I'm very happy with how this figure came out.
